Bottoms Up…

Podere Vignali in Pari, Italy

This year, I’ll be on a cleanse. I’ve had to eliminate all the naughty things in my diet for the next little while. What I’m going to miss the most is enjoying a lovely glass of wine. The upside is, my liver will get a beneficial respite and my pocket book will be fuller. Who wouldn’t want that? If you’re also planning to cut down on alcohol, here are some good alternatives:

Sparkling Ciders & Fruit Juices:
Martinelli’s , R.W. Knudsen’s, J.C. Meier’s and Sweetwater Orchards

Organic/Natural Spritzers:
Parker’s, Santa Cruz, Fizzy Lizzie’s

Mineral water such as Perrier or Pellegrino with a slice of lemon/lime or a dash of o.j. is a great substitute for sodas

Flavored syrups:
Monin, Torani offers sugar-free and organic varieties

This is a refreshing way to get in one of your daily vegetable servings:

Virgin Mary

ice cubes
celery salt for the glass rims (optional)
5-6 oz. tomato juice or vegetable cocktail
couple dashes of Worcestershire sauce
a few dashes of lemon juice
a couple dashes of Tabasco sauce
a pinch of cracked black pepper (optional)

Sra Martinez, here in Miami’s Design District, serves excellent Virgin Mary’s.

I don’t plan on drinking the following but wanted to include them for folks who still like their drink fix but don’t want all the side-effects:

Alcohol-free wine,beer & spirits:

Non-alcoholic wine and beer is really a misnomer. Legally, the standard for alcohol-free wine and beer is that the drink must contain less than 0.5% of alcohol.

Ariel vineyards produces white, red and sparkling non-alcoholic wines. If you can’t find them at your local wine store or supermarket, they could be found online. Here are two sites from the U.S. and Canada

Kaliber beer at .5% alcohol and O’Doul’s, Clausthauser and  Sharp’s beer at .4% alcohol

Scottish Spirits Ltd. alcohol-free whiskey

Blue Zero alcohol-free vodka

Here’s some easy breezy tableware to serve these beverages in.

Zero alcohol?! Dear God! LOL not even a small glass of wine every once in a while?!

  • LD says:

No, just for the next little while. That would defeat the whole purpose of my cleanse. Besides, Baby Jesus wouldn’t allow it. LOL

  • Gloria says:

Oh, Baby Jesus chose wine as his last drink, I’m sure he’d be ok with it! LOL If I think when I was a kid my great-grandmother used to give me bread with wine and sugar as a mid-afternoon snack… LOL

  • LD says:

Lucky Italian girl! I wish I had snack time like that! LOL
